Miami (Florida), USA (February 16th, 2017) – Ryan DeVos and Team XS Energy won the second event of the M32 Miami Winter Series this weekend in the final race. Following a windy practice day on Friday, the race committee completed an impressive fifteen races over two days in glorious conditions on Biscayne Bay.

“A sibling rivalry is always good, and we certainly brought it right up to the end” Ryan DeVos, (Macatawa, MI) commented on the exciting end to the weekend’s series. DeVos and team XS Energy won the event on the final reach to the finish, beating Team REV helmed by brother and winner of the first winter series event Rick DeVos by just one point.
PRO Liz Shaw and her team gave competitors a run for their money on Biscayne Bay. During a full practice day on Friday, a fresh breeze over fifteen knots funnelled out of Bear Cut to the north requiring teams to sail with a single reef. The breeze lightened for the weekend with the race committee completing eight races on Saturday and seven races on Sunday in glorious sunshine and a 6-10 knot easterly breeze. The six boat fleet kept the racing tight with several lead changes throughout the weekend. The lighter breeze on Sunday required plenty of skill and concentration was key, as Ryan described steering in light air: “It is really tough driving today because it’s shifty and all over the place; you have to lock in and not get frustrated.”

Finishing third and just five points behind the winner, experienced multihull sailor Jason Carroll, sailing as guest skipper for Team Convexity, posted four 1st place finishes over the weekend. Also sailing their first M32 event, Team 102BFAST skippered by Charles Tomeo showed consistent form finishing in 4th place just one point behind Convexity. “The level of sailing is very impressive, it’s highly competitive..” commented Tomeo.

The third event of the four-event winter series takes place from March 9-12 with three days of racing, coinciding with Bacardi Miami Sailing Week, also hosted in Regatta Park in Coconut Grove. “It’s great to be able to join our third series event with the popular Bacardi Miami Sailing Week,” commented M32 North America Director James Pleasance. “With new interest in the M32 fleet, we also hope to have 8-10 boats racing in March which will certainly make for a busy start line..”
