Monaco (March 5th, 2017) – Italia Sailing Team stole the show at the final event of M32 Monaco Winter Series by posting consistent top results and taking the series win. The Swedes on board Flux Team ruled the day with their experience in the M32 proving critical in the wet and wild 20+ knot conditions, but Riccardo Simoneschi and his all Italian crew posted consistent results and the double point event win put them at the top of both the regatta and the series leaderboard.
Conditions appeared perfect as the fleet headed out on the water with 15 knots blowing from the west and the sun beating down. As the swell grew and wind built, PRO Olivier Roinson called the teams to put in one reef.
With gusts fluctuating, teams held their distance back from the start line until the final seconds when they hit the gas pedal and accelerated six-wide to the reach mark. The fleet riding the three metre waves downwind was a sight to behold, heading towards the towering Monegasque mountains.
There was a clear divide with the lighter weight teams who benefitted on day 1 becoming overpowered as winds built through the race. Flux Team led from mark one to the finish, riding the waves just right. The mid-fleet battle going on behind saw teams jostle for places as the big swell provided a tough test for crew work and boat handling through manoeuvres.
Cape Crow Vikings had to make a last minute crew change this morning, and the conditions did not lend themselves to testing a new crew setup. However with strong results through the event and the entire series, the team finished with bronze on the podium after four events.
Candidate Sailing Team showed improvement in this event after only three events of sailing the M32 and leave with a fourth place finish at this regatta and on the series leaderboard. With this valuable experience under their belt the team now move on to the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup, and we hope to see them back after the summer.
Yacht Club de Monaco has provided the perfect home for the M32 Series to setup in Europe this winter, with challenging conditions for the teams in idyllic surroundings. We are excited to return here again soon.
